Ersöz, Vehbi. |
Farming since 1983, Vehbi Ersoz always thought there were some problems with the conventional farming methods. Using a different pesticide for each varmint and a different fertilizer for each missing substance in the soil made him question the function and procedures in conventional agriculture. Favoring a more holistic perspective in agriculture, he tried many methods to enrich the soil and increase the soil microorganisms, which in turn do the actual work. In his region he brought many leading and innovative techniques to life. Some of them are greenhouse farming, organic farming, biodynamic agriculture and Shumei method of agriculture. As a side benefit of applying many different techniques, he discovered that methods applied in one philosophy, may in... |

The objective of this article is to determine the economic performance of organic farms compared with conventional farms. The analysis included a set of farms the concentration of which is in natural and climatic conditions typical for this type of farming high. The outputs may be therefore considered representative and generalised. In order to determine the performance of these farms, their production basis was first assessed by using the indicators of available assets and assets coverage resources. Consequently, their efficiency was assessed based on the profit. For the purposes of comparison, the profit was (in various forms) converted to a hectare of agricultural land. The economic results were also compared with the average level achieved in the EU.... |

This paper presents some results from a wider research on economic and environmental sustainability of organic farming. It aims to compare organic and conventional farming in order to identify some of the main differences between those groups of farms that participated in the official Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN)-2003. The study is organized in two sections. The first part, after a brief literature review of the most recent statistical methodologies applied to identify the two similar groups of farms, presents some key economic variables (production, costs and revenues) and the most widely-used structural, economic and balance sheet indexes. The second part describes findings from a case study on the Italian fruit-growing sector. A non-parametric... |

Recent discussion surrounding organic agriculture (also referred to as organic farming) has turned from just whether it represents a viable alternative to conventional agriculture to whether it would be adopted by a significant percentage of farmers. After a beginning phase in which the adoption was mainly due to an ethically based choice of the farmer, the success in the market and the increasing demand for organic products are increasing the number of farmers converting their farming system. Despite the continuing importance of non-economic factors and the uncertainty given by short-term and mid-term fluctuations of prices, a decisive point is whether the conversion to organic farming may be worthwhile from an economic perspective. The aim of the paper... |

This paper reports on a series of case studies of the process of conversion to organic farming in five EU countries. The objectives of the case studies were: to identify factors affecting the decisions of conventional farmers considering conversion to organic farming; to identify problems that farmers thought they would face; and to consider and detail the financial impact of conversion on a range of farm businesses. National comparisons of the practice of conversion to organic farming reveals a wide diversity of support systems. Although these are in part necessitated by the diversity of enterprises suitable to different geographical locations, variation also results from different political agendas. Variation is also seen in farmer attitudes to organic... |

The objective of the study is to determine cost-effective interventions that will reach the critical mass of players within the Philippine organic rice value chain, with the requirements of the market as the starting point of the research. To design strategies and programs necessary for the organic rice industry to flourish, the requirements of the target customers were cross-matched against the competencies, capabilities and resources of both the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) and the existing players. The subsector analysis involved the determination of functions, participants, markets and market channels for the current organic rice produced in the Philippine Archipelago. Benchmarking with progressive and organic produce-exporting... |

The Brazilian land reform is a possible strategy to reduce poverty and increase social equality, but it depends on efficient public policies capable of making the peasants selfsustainable. With the goal of presenting the main socio-economic challenges of 33 rural settlements of former landless peasantsin Rio Grande do Norte State (Northeastern Brazil), we evaluated socio, economic and environmental aspects of 631 families from these settlements and 16 “Restoration Plan for Degraded Areas” (PRAD), prepared between 2007 and 2010. The emancipation of a settlement, measured through income generation, schooling level, and changes in people’s environmental habits, was not related to the age of the settlement. Also, the income of a settlement is hardly... |

In the Mediterranean Agriculture, the organic production constitutes a real possibility for sustainable development, it can keep a population in these areas and provide it with a decent work. This paper try to establish differences between conventional and organic systems of production, so that observation of these differences would lead to conclusions relating to the level of efficiency of one system as against the other. To achieve this objective, the research team analyzed the evolution of seventeen milk sheep farms in various places in the Castilla y León Region for a whole year. The study consisted in the modeling of the results of a Cobb-Douglas production function. The findings reveal that organic farms have higher production levels with the same... |

As public became more aware of the possible hazardous effects of the conventional farming products, organic agriculture practices have been increasingly spreading all over the world. Since the 1980’s, organic agriculture has been an important topic in the research agenda of the scientists active in various fields from science to biology or even economics. Economic Unions have been increasingly important in the last decade, in which one of them is the European Union (EU) being the most integrated of all. It is an enlarging body that has achieved considerable degree of economic integration. The EU is considered to be important for Turkey. The EU has a supporting role in agricultural policy. Organical agriculture, which is considered to... |
